Managing bulky household waste remains a significant challenge for councils seeking to reduce landfill, prevent illegal dumping and minimise the impact on local communities. All councils would benefit from an increased resource recovery, enabling better environmental and community outcomes without placing further pressure on waste budgets. This Global Insight Online Forum will explore how two councils are addressing bulky waste, showcasing community- driven solutions tailored to the needs of their residents.
Participants will gain insights into these successful programs and partnerships, helping delegates consider practical pathways their own council can adopt to support a more circular approach to managing bulking waste items
Alachua County, Florida
As home to the University of Florida, the city experiences a surge in unwanted furniture and household goods at the end of each semester, as significant student turnover results in items being left at the curb side. Like many councils, Alachua County has a zero waste policy in line with their climate action plan and determined they should partner with external organisation to address their bulky waste issue. By providing a grant, Alachua County has been able to partner with the Repurpose Project, and create furniture donation programs and convenient bulky waste collection services, transforming a seasonal waste challenge into a community resource opportunity, before items reach landfill.
Inner West Council
Following amalgamation, Inner West Council envisioned creating a community "reuse and recycling" centre through partnerships with reuse organisations and charities – a one-stop-shop for community sustainability. This curated space offers residents sustainability resources, services, and workshops and reflects the result of how the council stepped up to challenge new ways to manage bulky and hard to recycle items. More than a sustainability initiative, it creates community connections, keeps valuable resources in circulation, and generates new income opportunities. In this session, hear how Inner West Council is turning waste challenges into community value.
