This month we spoke with Luigi Mesisca, Director Corporate & Community, Port Pirie Regional Council, about his role, how his background in the public sector drew him to local government, what he's most excited about for Port Pirie Regional Council for the year ahead, and his routine for the perfect weekend.
What is your role and how long have you been in local government?
I am the Director Corporate & Community at Port Pirie Regional Council, a role I commenced in May 2025. While I am relatively new to local government, I bring experience from senior roles in state government with the State Treasurer as well as consulting, with a strong background in corporate governance, strategic planning, policy and finance, which I now apply in a local government context.
To the role you have brought a wealth of skills and experience in the public sector, including corporate governance, strategic planning, policy and finance, what drew you to regional local government?
What drew me to regional local government is the increasing influence and responsibility it carries. Councils are on the front line of serving their communities, with the licence to be creative in how we deliver core services and respond to local needs, while also being disciplined and transparent in how we manage and invest ratepayer money. That balance between community impact and public accountability is what I find most compelling.
With a fresh year upon us, what are you most excited for in Port Pirie Regional Council for 2026?
2026 is about consolidation and maturity. I’m most excited about continuing on the journey of embedding clear governance, strengthening organisational capability, and aligning our systems, people and finances to support Council’s long-term objectives. While it might not sound exciting, getting the fundamentals right will continue to build confidence and create favourable conditions for better outcomes for the community.
Tell us something about you that we don’t know OR what do you do with yourself in your spare time?
Outside of work, I’m fairly active and routine-driven. I enjoy putting the headphones on and getting to the gym, which helps with focus and balance, although they often come off, and half the time ends up being spent in conversation. Weekends usually involve local soccer and some good banter. I’m a mix of active and reflective - while I like having a plan, I’ve become more spontaneous over time. Training and staying busy help me reset and stay grounded in a demanding role.
