A WORD FROM THE CEO
Mad March might have officially come to an end for us, but that doesn't mean we've stopped charging ahead with planning for events, conferences, programs and educational opportunities into April and beyond!
Reflecting on the month that has been, it's been fulfilling to see so many of you join us across events such as the Women’s Network Forum, General Managers and Directors Network Forum, Annual State Conference, and the Business Performance and Improvement Network Forum.

This month, we held our LG Professionals SA 2025 Annual State Conference. With many incredible and inspiring speakers, we explored the essential dimensions of professional, community, and economic growth for local government employees. The feedback we've received from the event has been both exciting and appreciative - with many saying it was our best State Conference yet. No pressure for next year - but my team and I will be aiming to exceed expectations again in 2026!
At the State Conference we announced a new Women's scholarship, proudly supported by one of our fantastic conference
speakers, Daniel Fletcher. You can now apply for the opportunity and read our full recap of the event below.
As we head into April, the excitement is building for the LG Professionals SA Management Challenge. I know just how much effort, energy and excitement that goes into the day by the teams and mentors who are joining us, and I send my very best wishes to everyone who will be there on the day - see you soon!
I’m excited to announce that the Workforce and Gender Equality in South Australian Local Government Project has been completed, and we are sure it will provide valuable information and resources for the sector. The project has been undertaken over the past 14 months by LG Professionals SA and supported by the LGA Research & Development Scheme. We will be selectively releasing the report over the next few weeks and if you would like to make sure you receive a copy, please click here to register your interest.
We have kicked off announcing finalists for our LG Professionals SA 24th Annual Leadership Excellence Awards – I hope you hear some cheers within your workspaces as the news hits your inboxes over the following weeks. Congratulations again to all finalists and a sincere thank you to all who nominated.
Best wishes,
Rhiannon

We caught up with one of last year's Emerging Leaders Program participants, Josephine Baker, Executive Assistant & Project Officer, City of Mitcham, to find out how she enjoyed the program.
What made you sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program?
I was interested in meeting new people from other councils and gaining an understanding of how things worked in and across their local government organisations. Through the program, I made some great friends who are fabulous contacts should I need to ask questions of other councils to problem-solve and make improvements to my own processes and projects.
What was your biggest takeaway from the program? Communication and leadership skills. There are many different forms of leaders, with the most well-known being technical leaders and people leaders. Understanding these leadership types has allowed me to have discussions with fellow staff members about any issues they are experiencing, as well as problems they might be having within their personal leadership sphere. Understanding the Team Management Profile and from that, the differences between people's different working and communication styles has given me further insight into how some people work differently.
|
|
As an Executive Assistant, this is a great asset to hold, as I've been able to apply this to how my Managers and General Managers work, and how I can change some of my work styles to accommodate them.
What advice would you give to someone considering doing the Emerging Leaders Program? Don’t consider it - just do it! What is the worst that can happen? You may not get in this year, but try again next year. Even if you just mention it to your leader so they are aware you are interested can go a long way. The LG Professionals SA Management Challenge is also a great step toward learning alternative ways on how to approach work, and that there are such a wide variety of people across your organisation with different and valuable skills.
