July 2025
Edition 166

Last week, we hosted the LG Professionals SA Community Development Network Conference, welcoming practitioners from across South Australia for a day filled with bold ideas, practical insights, and real-world stories. The conference showcased the evolving role of local government in building stronger, more connected communities. Congratulations to the Community Development Network Committee on another exciting and inspiring event.

We’ve also recently launched a new series of Artificial Intelligence training sessions, designed specifically for the local government context. The feedback has been phenomenal, and it’s been a pleasure to provide such timely and relevant content to the sector. If you're curious to learn more, check out our current AI courses - or reach out to share a topic you'd like to see covered in future sessions.

Best of luck to CoSmic Council from the City of Salisbury who will take on challengers from across Australia and New Zealand at the Australasian Management Challenge Final in Perth from 3 to 5 August – you will do SA proud regardless of the outcome.

Wishing you all the best for the month ahead as we continue to make our way through this wintery weather.

Best wishes,

Rhiannon

Meet the Council Rewriting the Rules on
Access and Representation

How City of Victor Harbor’s award-winning inclusion project is opening doors across the sector.

When Angela Schiller was elected to the City of Victor Harbor Council in 2022, she made history as South Australia’s first Council Member who is blind. But what followed has proven just as significant - an ambitious, whole-of-organisation project to ensure she could participate fully in civic life, and in the process, a new benchmark for accessibility in local government.

Now, that project - Accessibility in Action: Supporting a Council Member who is Blind - has been recognised with the Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award at the 2025 LG Professionals SA Leadership Excellence Awards.

For the team behind the initiative, the award is a celebration of collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to ensuring all voices can be heard - no matter the circumstance.

LG PROFESSIONALS SA MENTOR MENTEE CONNECTIONS PILOT
Expressions of interest due by Friday 8 August!

Mentoring, either as a Mentor or Mentee, can provide unparalleled career guidance, professional support, uncover knowledge sharing opportunities and help individuals grow personally and professionally.

We are inviting all women working in local government to join us in the
LG Professionals SA Women's Network Mentor Mentee Connections Pilot - an initiative which aims to support women in local government through mentorship, fostering personal and professional growth, and creating valuable networking opportunities.

After a successful first round of this initiative last year, we successfully paired 44 Mentor Mentee partnerships between women in local government from across South Australia. Both Mentors and Mentees embraced their roles with enthusiasm and dedication, actively engaging in the process to build strong, meaningful connections.

Wherever you are in your career, this program will work to pair you with the best professional Mentor/Mentee to provide both with the opportunity for open communication, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to the mentoring process.

Express your interest by COB Friday 8 August to be considered for mentoring allocations, with the 2025 Pilot to commence later this year.

We caught up with Claire MacBethCommunity Learning & Activation LeaderCity of Charles Sturt, about what led her to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program, her takeaways from a recent module, and what she's most looking forward to as part of the development opportunity.

What made you sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program?

I applied for the Emerging Leaders Program to enhance my self-awareness, identify areas for growth, and further develop my current skill set. I was seeking a meaningful way to invest in my professional development, and the program stood out as the perfect opportunity to do so. Knowing it was the 20th year of the program made it feel even more significant. What better time to take this step in my leadership journey than during such a milestone year?

This wasn’t just about ticking a development box; it was about stepping into the next chapter of my career with intention and purpose.

The most recent UniSA module focused on Organisational Culture and Team Dynamics – what was your biggest takeaway from this session?

Stepping into a new role and leading a new team, this session couldn’t have come at a better time. My biggest takeaway was the power of a common purpose. It reinforced how important it is to create clarity around why we exist as a team, recognise the strengths we each bring, and ensure we’re all heading in the same direction.

It’s sparked a renewed focus for me. To take the time to understand our collective skillset, define our shared purpose, and create space for individual and team growth. When people feel valued and connected, that’s when the real magic happens.

What are you most looking forward to as the program progresses?

I’m really looking forward to being stretched, stepping outside my comfort zone and discovering what I’m truly capable of. I’m excited about the opportunity to connect with others in the sector, share experiences, and be part of those powerful conversations that challenge your thinking and spark new ideas.

More than anything, I’m looking forward to gaining a deeper understanding of who I am as a leader and how I can use that insight to create greater impact within my organisation and the community.
