A word from the Acting CEO

Welcome to the end of September!

It is with gratitude that I share that Tahlia Willey, our Network and Program Officer will finish up with us tomorrow, to commence a role at City of Playford. Tahlia has been an incredible asset to our team over the past nearly 4 years, providing invaluable support to us, our Members and Networks – we will miss her. Last week, we also said farewell to Hannah Knott, our Events and Administration Officer.

With change comes opportunity, and to that end, we have several short term vacancies, with support required to assist with a busy calendar over the next couple of months. If you are interested in the opportunity to be part of our hard working, supportive team, or know a friend or colleague who has a passion for the delivery of a high quality customer experience, please reach out via email to rhiannon@lgprofessionalssa.org.au. We will also be recruiting for several longer term roles over the next few weeks and will share these with all contacts once  available. There are lots of exciting things happening at LG Professionals SA - it's a great time to join the team!

To those of you interested in broadening your leadership skillset through a leadership program in 2022, make sure you register for the Virtual Information Sessions – details below. Often the fear of the unknown may hold us back from pursuing opportunities - join us in these informal sessions and ask any questions you may have.

Finally, we recently launched the Call for Nominations for the LG Professionals SA Board. If you are a Member of LG Professionals SA and interested in sharing your passion for the sector and supporting the development of local government people, I encourage you to consider submitting a nomination, Information has been sent to all Members however if you’d like to discuss what’s involved please don’t hesitate to reach out.

We caught up with one of this year's Emerging Leaders cohort, Kelly Vandermoer, Finance & Executive Administration Officer at East Waste to find out how she's finding the program so far.

What made you sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program?

I have only worked within Local Government for a short time, but it didn’t take long to realise that I could see myself in it for the long haul.  The Emerging Leaders Program presented as a worthwhile opportunity to get to know others in the industry, understand what it’s like working in Council from a range of different perspectives and seniority levels, and gain insight into what it takes to be a successful leader.

The most recent module focused on the Political Context – what were some of your takeaways from this module?

I found the complex dynamic of the relationships between Council Executives, Staff, and Elected Members the most interesting, and how it must be delicately managed to ensure successful outcomes for our communities.

What are you most looking forward to as the program progresses?

I’m really looking forward to seeing what each of the groups put forward for the final group project. We are really passionate about our topic and can’t wait to see what the rest of the groups have been working on.

Friday 12 November 2021 - Adelaide Convention Centre  

Looking forward, Australia will be different. Demographics will change – Australia’s ageing population the biggest factor.  Inter-generational burdens will shift.  Economies will change – as will communities.  Long term challenges but also long-term opportunities.  Local Government’s role will emerge and necessarily evolve – different Councils will require different capability and capacity.

This is an important conference not to be missed. Save the date! Full program to be released soon. 

Congratulations to the Wakefield Regional Council COVID Support Program Team for their COVID-19 Business Support Grants Program, winner of the Excellence in Local Economic Development category at the 20th Annual Leadership Excellence Awards earlier this year. We chatted to Andrew MacDonald, Chief Executive Officer at Wakefield Regional Council about the program, the benefits of entering and what it means to receive this recognition.

Can you provide an overview of the COVID-19 Support Grants Program?

In 2020, we quickly launched the support program worth up to $867,000 to steer the community through the COVID-19 crisis – becoming the first council in SA to do so.

Along with rate relief, Council offered utility grants to community and sporting groups, as well as generous business support grants of up to $5,000.

By the end of the 2019-20 year, 33 clubs and community groups and 40 local businesses, and 42 rates and service charge remissions had been supported by the program.

Why did you enter the Leadership Excellence Awards? 

The response to COVID was a huge team effort and great opportunity to show how working with local organisations can bring best outcomes for the community.

It’s not about competing with other councils but rather acknowledging what local government can do.

There was so much focus on delivering the COVID response – this was a nice opportunity to draw breath and reflect on what we had achieved.

What does winning this award mean to the Council, staff and the community? 

The awards night was about celebrating all the hard work we’d put into delivering the program during an unprecedented and uncertain time.

It was important to thank all those who contributed to making it such a successful program– the elected members, the program recipients, my team and the community.

What would be your advice for others thinking of nominating for a Leadership Excellence Award in the future? 

It’s true that Local Government does not celebrate its successes and achievements enough.

The Leadership Excellence Awards provide the perfect opportunity to showcase what local government does for its communities and to celebrate amazing teams and their incredible achievements.

Without these awards the teams behind these projects would go without industry recognition.

Even if your role doesn’t require a lot of writing, how you come across is crucial to your credibility. The ability to write clearly, precisely, powerfully and persuasively is a key skill that enables you to summarise and present ideas, build relationships and gain commitment to action. It can also demonstrate your knowledge, confidence and professionalism.

This course uses your own writing examples to demonstrate the use of Plain English principles and persuasive writing techniques.

Beyond providing you with essential knowledge and skills to plan, manage and execute projects on time and on budget, this program takes a deeper dive into project management theory and looks at both operational and strategic elements of project management.

We caught up with Taylor Eglinton, Community Engagement Advisor at City of Onkaparinga about her recent participation in and graduation from our Strategic Management Program (SMP).

"The Strategic Management Program was an experience that challenged me in more ways than one. It prompted me to think about my experiences in a different context and through a more strategic lens. This was an experience that provided significant value and growth to my personal and professional life. The program extended an opportunity to continue developing my learning at a university level and has taken me one step closer to one day completing an MBA.

At first, it was quite intimidating being the only non-manager within the cohort. However, I quickly realised this was an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone was learning on the same level. Members were able to develop network connections throughout the experience, relationships which have continued beyond the Strategic Management Program. In addition to this, the program is specifically developed for local government professionals, therefore theories and learnings were highly relevant and fit within the local government context.

Lastly, this program provided me with the confidence I needed to pursue my career further and push past my comfort zone. Since graduation, I have moved into a higher responsibility role within a new LGA, a role I am thoroughly enjoying.

If you are a person looking to challenge yourself, develop networks, learn new skills or refine old skills, then I highly recommend undertaking the Strategic Management Program."

This year's International County/City Management Association Annual Conference will be held starting at the end of next week from  3 - 6 October 2021.

Local Government Professionals Australia National President Jonathan Throssell, and Immediate Past President Victoria MacKirdy are taking part in this year's ICMA conference virtually.

Their presentations will be about the gender balance in Australian Local Government leadership, including what Local Government's are doing to achieve the sector's 40:40:20 gender balance targets, and what Local Government Professionals Australia has been and is doing to support the sector's target.

Although this year's conference will be held in Oregon, in the United States, the conference is highly accessible to an international audience as all registrations are free for virtual attendance outside of the US & Canada. 

The thought-provoking content which this virtual experience provides is not to be missed, especially in light of the challenges and opportunities currently faced by the local government sector.
