Leaders Connect

A word from the CEO

Welcome to the August edition of Leaders Connect.

August has been a busy one for LG Professionals SA – we’ve held several Network Meetings, supported the delivery of important sector events and been planning and preparing for our upcoming events and launch of all leadership programs for the coming year – keep an eye on your inbox as all our leadership programs will be launching soon.

To those of you interested in broadening your leadership skillset through any of these programs, make sure you register for the Virtual Information Sessions – details will be released in the coming weeks. Often the fear of the unknown may hold us back from pursuing opportunities - join us in these informal sessions and ask any questions you may have.

Speaking of leadership, if you are interested in sharing your passion for the sector and supporting the development of local government people, I encourage you to consider submitting a nomination for the Board –information will be sent to all Members in September. However, if you’d like to discuss what’s involved in being a Board Member in the meantime please don’t hesitate to reach out.

As always, please feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss your professional development needs – we are here to support you to be the best version of you.

Stay safe, stay well, and happy reading!

Rhiannon

National Management Challenge Final wrap up

The LG Professionals SA team were thrilled to support the delivery of the 2022 Australasian Management Challenge Final, which was held in Adelaide from 28-30 August. SA was well-represented in the Final by SA Management Challenge Winners The Notorious C.O.B from the City of Burnside. The competition was fierce, and all 8 teams did an amazing job representing their home state. We were elated to see the City of Burnside take out third place overall! In a competition made up of the best of the best across Australia and New Zealand this is a fantastic accomplishment.

The final placegetters were:

  • First place - Wanneroo Koorliny Koora Yeyi Mila from the City of Wannerroo (Western Australia)
  • Second place - The Paranaple Pioneers from Devonport City Council (Tasmania)
  • Third place - The Notorious C.O.B from the City of Burnside (South Australia)

Gary Okley, Head of Public Sector from JLT with City of Burnside team members, Andrew Gurr, Stephen Smith, Philip Roetman, Darren Baynes, Matt Deckert and Jaclyn Caskey

What is your role and what does it involve?

My role is interesting and diverse. I oversee all Community Services at the City of Playford. So that’s everything from home assist and disability services to community development to creative cultural development. My role is really to focus on that next two-to-three-year window in terms of strategic service delivery. It’s a fantastic, fast paced and rewarding role. Read more...

Maxima’s Flexible School-Based Apprenticeship Program gets a green thumbs up from Elise

In collaboration with The Department for Education and Local Government, Maxima’s Flexible School-Based Traineeship Program offers high school students the opportunity to follow their apprenticeship goals with paid council placements, while still earning their high school certificate. One of Maxima’s many success stories is former Horticulture Apprentice with the City of Tea Tree Gully, Elise. Employed full-time on the City’s Horticulture crew, Elise could not imagine life behind a desk. “How can you be upset working outside? It releases so much serotonin.”

Maxima Apprenticeship & Traineeship Consultant and Team Leader for Trades Sarah Tinkham said the program is an incredible opportunity to set participants apart from their peers in a paid role. “Students who know what they want to do are able to get a head start on their career and are still eligible to graduate with their classmates.”
