Industry Trends - Future Melbourne

A truly inspiring case study!

'FutureMelbourne has been the most ambitious community consultation project ever undertaken by the City of Melbourne and, indeed, by a local government organisation.

The extensive community engagement undertaken in the development process has ensured that it is a rich and robust plan that really represents the community’s vision for our city.'

    Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle.

Content and assets are increasingly digital. These days audio, video, and interactive elements are the norm. Audiences consume content across multiple channels including mobile, social, and the web.

Whether for customers, employees, or business partners, digital engagement can open dialogue, generate new ideas, and break new ground in the collaboration space, particularly for local government.
LG Professionals Australia takes a look at a case study that focused on digital engagement to enable the City of Melbourne to embark on a vision for bigger and better collaboration.

The Thought Space

What’s happening in the Leadership Lab?

The next event in the Leadership Lab is Benevolent Leadership: It’s Really Hard Being Soft!

Leadership is often associated with directives, control and authority, but really how effective is the tough leadership approach?

The challenge of how to be a good leader seems to be a perennial problem.  An increasing challenge has emerged as those being lead become increasingly diverse, in terms of professional skills, demographics and culture, generational attitudes and workplace expectations.

The question is then, with leadership responsibility and management obligations, isn’t it necessary to be clear, firm and decisive?  Or not?  What about soft leadership?  This is the topic for May and we welcome our artist-intellectual extraordinaire Lisa Philip-Harbutt to share her thoughts on this compelling approach to leadership.

For further information or to register your interest in attending, please contact Mel at or 8291 7994.

Emerging Leaders Program - Sold Out!

Registrations for this year’s Emerging Leaders Program have now closed and once again we have a completely full program of 28 participants who we look forward to working with throughout the rest of the year.

It has been fantastic to see the amount of interest in leadership development through the sector, and for those who missed out on a place this time; we hope to see you as part of next year’s cohort!

  Tips and Ideas

How to redesign your life with just three questions
Here’s the main problem with the way that most people live their life: Instead of living the life they want, they live the life they are given.

Most of the time, we react to situations by following the path of least resistance. It makes sense that this happens. We’re only human.

When a job opportunity opens up and we need the money, we take the job without really considering the long term. The problem is, if you repeat this behavior cycle enough times, one day you wake up wondering how you 'got here' and 'whose life is this that I’m living?'

To redirect your course, you need to interrupt that pattern of behavior.

You can do that by asking yourself the following three questions every single day of your life. The answers to these questions will serve as your roadmap—and with it, you’re less likely to be distracted to take a wrong turn by opportunities that don’t move you closer to your goals.

Local Government Professionals Australia, SA 15th Annual Leadership Excellence Gala Awards Dinner

Former Playford CEO Tim Jackson, in accepting his well-deserved award for Outstanding Contribution to Local Government, commented on how much the awards dinner has grown since the inaugural event back in 2001.

A very worthy recipient, Tim was one of the key board members of LG Professionals SA back then and was instrumental in getting the awards - and the dinner - off the ground.  The first event had about 80 attendees, but he and his board colleagues had visions of something bigger in the years to follow.

Roll on 15 years later, and the awards night is simply the #1, not-to-be-missed event on the calendar for all professionals involved in local government - and this year, it boasted almost 500 attendees.

It's the Academy Awards, the Logies and the Emmys all rolled in to one - with the focus firmly on recognising the contributions that individuals and councils in SA have made to innovate, improve and enhance their council operations and services to the betterment of their community members and the sector as a whole.

This most recent awards night, held on the 15 April - was simply spectacular.
It kicked off with a bang with a stirring rendition of Roxanne by the Baker Boys -and the momentum didn't stop.

It was a night to pause and highlight those who are making a real difference in our sector with more than 12 awards presented to well-deserving winners.

Council staff, managers and elected members chatted, mingled and networked - and also found time to enjoy the restaurant-quality meal and of course dance the night away.

The highlight of the night (the Gold Logie, if you will) was an award for the LG Professionals SA Management Challenge winners.  This year, the City of Salisbury team, accompanied by much cheering and back-slapping, was brought on stage to receive their winning team award.

This was their second win on the trot - can they make it a three-peat next year?  If so, they'll go into the record books because there has never been a 3 times in a row repeat winner.

Congratulations to everyone who was nominated, won an award or even just attended.  Once again it was a fantastic night to frock up, catch up with colleagues, share stories and celebrate achievements.

See you next year - we're planning for more than 500, so get ready for a blockbuster...
