Public Value - how do you create it, and how do you measure it?

The concept of Public Value - sometimes called the "common good" - is not new, but it's a been a difficult thing to quantify and measure on an ongoing basis.

Back in 2004 the BBC in the UK created a "Public Value Test" to weigh options for new programming.

ACELG has released a paper on "creating Public Value locally" that outlines how the concept of Public Value can be employed in Local Government.

Community Managers Network

Aim: To provide leadership and support for people working in the Community Development and Community Services Sector within Local Government and related organisations.

On 21 November, Together SA CEO Kate Simpson (pictured below with Bronwyn Webster) addressed the
Community Managers Network about Collective Impact and the role of local government.  19 members attended and the room was buzzing with enthusiasm.

The Community Managers Network has two very important and exciting projects on the agenda for the first part of 2015.  Firstly we are working with the LGA, through the Research & Development Scheme, to revise the Local Government Ageing Strategy, with a view to providing practical guidance to the Local Government sector about how to effectively, collaboratively and creatively plan for and manage the needs, impacts and opportunities of an ageing population.

The second project will develop orientation/induction material for community services/community development staff who are new to local government.

The project will focus on raising awareness about the local government legislative and democratic context and the unique ways in which community services are provided by local government.  The induction program will comprise of discrete parts: an initial workshop process and supplementary workbook and readings, which address the core material needed for orientation; ongoing access to self-directed modules which will be available online; and network events facilitated by the LGCM Network.

Both projects will be finalised by the middle of next year.

General Manager's Network

The Network is meeting on 27 November at the Zoo for a tailored unique session focusing on executive careers, elected member relationships and sharing.

Leaders Alumni Network

Aim: to promote and develop leadership excellence within local government amongst LG Professionals SA leadership program graduates.

Tips and Ideas

Capturing all the ideas - Brainstorming vs Brainwriting

One of the problems associated with the Brainstorming technique is it's possible that only the loudest or most confident participants will be heard.

Brainwriting is a new approach that ensures all the best ideas and opinions are captured.

2014 Women’s Conference - "It's about time"

Report from Cate Atkinson, Chair of the Women's Network.

I would very much like to thank and commend the 2014 Women’s Conference: "It's about time", held on Friday 7th November.

The day provided a palette of information and opportunity focussed on “Its About Time” – time to change and take every opportunity to ensure you get the best out of life.

Erma Ranieri, Commissioner for Public Sector Employment, Office for Public Sector and Telstra Business Woman of the Year 2014 launched the conference with her views about her career and life journey and what she had experienced and learnt along the way.

Together with Erma was Deb Richardson and Jodie Rugless, both successful women working in local government and their approach to success.

Jodie Nevid provided fabulous training on how to get the best out of life without guilt and engaged us in how we can control what we want in life.

Finally, Rebecca Mezzino ran us through how to deal with interruptions and distractions and how to be focussed and work proactively to make the most of every day.

It was a truly fabulous event, and one which improves each year.

Thank you to those who attended the Annual General Meeting on the 30th October and were also part of the official launch of the new LG Professionals SA brand.

Members whom attended also experienced the Leadership Lab in the Executive Education Unit – an opportunity that all members can take up as part of their LG Professionals SA membership.
