A word from the CEO

This edition of Leaders Connect has a rural focus as we prepare for our upcoming Rural Management Challenge to be held in Port Augusta on 16 October and our annual Community Managers meeting in a regional location to be held at Victor Harbor on 31 October / 1 November.

In the coming months, information regarding our AGM will be publicised including a call for nominations for members of the Divisional Board. Please consider nominating for the Board as a way of shaping your Association and expanding your local government network.

The team here at LGMA (SA) are busy planning for the next year of exciting events including the 2014 Conference and Awards Dinner.  If you have any suggestions or ideas, now is the time to share them – we look forward to making these events the best yet!

Finally, a special congratulations to Business and Risk Solutions, Platinum Partners of LGMA (SA), on winning the Telstra Business Award for SA Small Business of the Year! You can view their acceptance speech here.

I hope you all enjoy this edition of Leaders Connect.

Tips and Ideas -

Do you have a long commute to the office?  This is time that can be more productive by using spoken books from

Have you ever wanted to read the whole, unabridged version of Leo Tolstoy's famous tome, War and Peace, but just didn't have the time?

Well, now you don't have to!

In just under 61 hours, someone will read it to you, while you commute to work!  (ok...maybe that's an extreme example....)

But the idea is a good one - choose from thousands of titles from fiction, self help, motivational, lifestyle, health - it's all available.

Rural Challenge - Call for Expressions of Interest

We are pleased to announce that plans are underway to hold our 3rd Annual Rural Challenge and Dinner on the 16th October in Port Augusta.

Information on the event can be found below.

A great deal of planning and generous support from volunteers and corporate partners goes into making this event a success.  To that end, we are now seeking expressions of interest for council teams and event sponsors.

For further information or to indicate your interest please contact Taryn Sexton on

What is the Management Challenge?

It is a sophisticated developmental program that produces outcomes that have relevant, tangible and enduring benefits for your people, your teams and your organisation.  It’s also good fun, great value and highly effective training.  Councils enter teams of 4-6 staff members from any level.  These teams come together to compete with other rural councils in a day filled with a variety of tasks.  Previous tasks have included role plays, reports, presentations, mock media interviews, and team swaps.

Why Participate?

The Rural Management Challenge provides rural councils with a unique opportunity for staff development.  The emphasis of the Challenge is one of learning – both individually and as a team.
It provides an opportunity for those who participate to push back horizons and in doing so develop management skills.  It is also designed to extend the networks of the people involved in the program.

What are the benefits?

At the end of the Challenge, participants will:
•    have an improved knowledge of management techniques
•    have improved decision making techniques
•    be more prepared to respond appropriately to unpredictable circumstances
•    be ready to facilitate and provide cohesive teamwork
•    ready to assist with development of customer service
•    ready to respond effectively to interaction pressures
•    ready to build effective networks

Each team and CEO will receive a detailed report from the professional facilitators that will form the basis for debriefing and the application of the learning outcomes to the workplace.
